One Day Tour - Varirata National Park Experience to run for the second time

A short trip away from the hustle and bustle of Port Moresby up scenic windy roads and curves lies Varirata National Park (sic)
The full day Varirata National Park Experience Tour will run for its second time this year on the Saturday 18th April, 2020 since the inception of the tour last year  (09th November, 2019).

The purpose of the full day tour to Varirata National Park is to make awareness domestically for Varirata National Park and create interest for the local residents to value and appreciate the natural setting of the park with activities like; bird watching, trekking, nature walk, indulging into nature or experience a Koiari cultural performance  in the park and have a locally prepared Koiari buffet lunch.

Varirata National Park went into a major rehabilitation since 2015 in an effort to address the biodiversity conservation by the Government of Papua New Guinea though Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) as the lead agency in partnership with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The technical cooperation between CEPA and JICA was called the Project for Biodiversity Conservation through implementation of the PNG Policy on Protected Areas.

Varirata National Park was one of the target areas of the project for the development of Terrestrial Protected Area while the marine component of the project was for the development of the Bootless Bay areas as Marine/Coastal Protected Area model.

Through the technical cooperation, there were significant and impact projects delivered at the park; including the notable one which is the - Varirata National Park Information Center which comprises of the Environmental Education Exhibition, office space for the park staff and the storage room. The wooden decking is connected to the Information Center and the auditorium, making it spacious for cultural performance and other outdoor activities.

The full-day Varirata National Park Experience Tour was developed by the project team for CEPA-JICA to give opportunity to get away from the city's hustle-and-bustle. The tour logistics are supported by UNDP through its GEF 5 project team.

The highlights of the full day Varirata National Park Experience Tour will feature the following activities;

On the way to Mt. Giluwe

I was not thinking of tourism when building my house. I needed a space to live after retirement. I built my house without knowing that this place will have more space to accommodate visitors. Now my intentions for the house have changed into tourism business and the Piambil Faith Missionary Home is a home away from home for visitors. – Rev Wane Ninjipa

ONE of the oldest serving missionaries of the PNG Bible Church, Rev Wane Ninjipa has turned his newly built retirement home into a comfortable haven for visitors into Piambil Village in Southern Highlands.
The village is located near the foothills of Mt Giluwe, the second highest peak in the Pacific after Mt Whilem and located in Imbonggu District.
Rev Ninjipa’s idea was to renovate and do extensions on his old house and he started gathering materials since 2013. However, he changed his mind one morning after looking down to the swampy area at the edge of his garden.
